<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I know what a relief it was as a kid to finally have a difficult concept explained in a way that provided clarity. If I can help take the stress out of a student’s learning journey, I’m always thrilled. What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? Anything to do with critical reading and writing! I’m a writer, and the mechanics and poetics of language have fascinated me since my teens. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? Their focus on individualized approaches to learning and intellectual development. Every student is different, and Apt sessions are tailored to their unique abilities and needs. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I majored in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. My favorite class was my thesis writing workshop, Writing the Queer Story. It was an incredibly educational and self-affirming experience. What were your favorite extracurricular activities in high school or college? I was on the Knowledge Bowl team in high school, and some of my teammates are close friends to this day. In college, I spent a lot of time doing comedy and musical theater. What do you like to do in your free time? Writing! Short stories, personal essays, comedy sketches, musicals – whatever gives me joy in the moment. What’s your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? Book: Don’t Get Too Comfortable by David Rakoff. Song: “We Have All the Time In the World” by Louis Armstrong. Snack food: the off-brand potato chips that they sold in my dorm’s vending machine at Barnard. I sadly forget their name. Tell us about a favorite vacation. Cycling solo through Ireland, England, France, and Spain the summer before my senior year of college! Apple Maps took me on a number of awful routes, and at one point, I had to push my bike through a swamp in French farm country. If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive, who would you choose, and why? Gertrude Stein. I want to know what it was like to host a rotating cast of creatives in one’s home while hiding in plain sight as one half of a committed lesbian couple. In a foreign country. In the 1920s. Salty or sweet person? What is your favorite salty/sweet snack? It’s close, but I’d ultimately say sweet! I love Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream with Nutella on top. Perfect meal = that, plus the vodka sauce pizza at Artichoke Pizza in Brooklyn. Please tell us more fun facts about yourself! I make incredible apple pie. It was my grandmother’s recipe, and no one can beat it. No bakery, no veteran chef, no one.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I most enjoy helping students to build their confidence with material they have found difficult, and helping to make it feel easier for them. What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? My favorite subjects to tutor are math, statistics, history, and English. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? I like the chance to work with students who are committed to being successful and are motivated to seek help to reach their goals. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? In college, I majored in statistics and analytical economics. My favorite class was economics of sports, where we covered the finances of the pro and college sports industries. What were your favorite extracurricular activities in high school or college? My favorite extracurricular activity in high school was my school’s sports journalism club. In college, I joined the ski club and spent a lot of time on trips with them, and I also found a sports analytics club. What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I like to work out at the gym, go hiking, and play basketball. In the winter, I am also an avid skier. What’s your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? Book: The Shining. Band: OutKast (Song: B.O.B.) Snack Food: Swedish Fish. Tell us about a favorite vacation. I’m conflating multiple vacations here, but my family used to camp near North Conway, NH on Labor Day weekend every year, in a huge lot with extended family and friends. It was frequently my favorite weekend of the year. If you could have a coffee with any person, dead or alive, who would you choose, and why? I’d probably choose to have coffee with Bill Russell. I’d have plenty of basketball questions (players from today he’d like to play with, what it was like to guard Wilt Chamberlain, etc.) but also a few more serious questions like whether the NBA pressured him against taking part in the civil rights movement, or how tense the room was during the All-Star game strike in 1964 and how players handled that pressure. Salty or sweet person? What is your favorite salty/sweet snack? I’m generally a sweet person, but I already used Swedish Fish as the answer to a similar question, so my favorite salty snack is cashews. Please tell us more fun facts about yourself! I made a website to plot how good MLB hitters are against pitches in different locations. I wrote NFL mock drafts every year from 2018-2024 (and resuming this year) I taught both of my siblings how to ski after teaching myself by trying to keep up with friends.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I enjoy helping students understand math because it's a subject I genuinely love. It's rewarding to share that passion and help others see that math can be both approachable and interesting! What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I majored in chemical engineering in college but my favorite classes were my math classes I took for my minor. What do you like to do in your free time? I love to play soccer and run. I also love music and play the piano and guitar. In my free time, I love to read, listen to music, watch movies, spend time with my friends and family, and travel. Favorite Book: Harry Potter - I love how the series pulls you into the universe so completely that you forget you're even reading. Every detail is thoughtfully crafted and perfectly connected, making it feel like you're there with the characters. Favorite Movie: The Goonies - I watched it a lot growing up and always loved the sense of adventure and teamwork. It's the kind of movie that makes you wish you had a big group of friends and a mystery to solve. Favorite Food: Pizza - It always hits the spot, no matter what. With so many varieties, it never gets old and is always the perfect choice. Favorite Vacation: Studying abroad in Greece - It was amazing to experience the history firsthand, especially visiting all the ancient temples dedicated to the gods that I had read about. The culture and scenery made it unforgettable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The University of Vermont Visits Apt Tutoring - University of Vermont: An Update with Admissions Officer Aja</image:title>
<image:caption>In September, Aja, an admissions officer from the University of Vermont (UVM), visited our office to share the latest updates about the university. Here are some exciting highlights from her visit: New Logo & Branding UVM recently unveiled a new logo that reflects the university’s expansive mission and visually conveys the university’s national and even international reach. Early Decision 2 for 2024-2025 Admissions UVM introduced the Early Decision 2 option for the 2024-2025 admissions cycle. For the Class of 2028, UVM received 350 Early Decision applications, with the majority coming from Vermont residents. Selective Majors and Opportunities Nursing and Environmental Science remain UVM’s most competitive programs. However, UVM offers a variety of other environmental-related majors, providing numerous options for students passionate about the environment. Changing Majors at UVM While UVM students are allowed to change majors, it’s important to note that the Nursing program operates as a direct admit program, meaning students cannot switch to it after being admitted to the university. The Nursing application pool has seen a significant increase, nearly tripling in size. Merit-Based Aid & Financial Aid Shifts UVM offers merit-based scholarships up to $25,000. However, this amount may vary depending on the applicant pool, as the university is shifting its resources toward need-based financial aid. When awarding merit scholarships, UVM evaluates grades, course rigor, and, if submitted, test scores. For the Class of 2028, 63% of applicants chose not to submit test scores. Pitch Challenge UVM has launched a unique opportunity for high school students with its Pitch Challenge. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors are invited to visit UVM and pitch their ideas. The competition winner will receive a full tuition scholarship to the university. STEM Scholars Program UVM is now offering a new program aimed at supporting students interested in STEM fields. Applicants to the STEM Scholars Program must apply through Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA). The program meets financial need and offers an exciting pathway for aspiring STEM students. Business Program Updates UVM's business program has recently removed the requirement for precalculus, making it more accessible to a wider range of applicants. On-Campus Housing & New Facilities UVM requires students to live on campus for their first two years. Afterward, students can move to affiliated housing near campus. Recently, the university completed the construction of a new housing facility, Catamount East, which offers additional modern living spaces for students. Demonstrating Interest UVM values demonstrated interest. Aja encourages prospective students to email her, write the supplemental essay, and visit campus if possible. If you’re unable to visit in person, attending a virtual information session is a great alternative. Why UVM? If you’re seeking a tight-knit community in a vibrant city surrounded by natural beauty, consider exploring UVM. With new programs, a commitment to student success, and a welcoming atmosphere, UVM might just be the perfect fit for you! Thank you for stopping by, Aja!</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? What I enjoy most about tutoring is the one-on-one connection I am able to make with the student and [being able to] focus on the specific issues that they are struggling with. What do you like to do in your free time? I love doing crafts, making soup, and walking on the beach in the warm weather. I enjoy spending time with my two daughters and am always on the lookout for fun activities for us to do as a family, like an outing on a lobster boat, or a bonsai tree-making class, or a fun trip somewhere. I also enjoy volunteering at a local cat shelter and have a cat of my own that I am very attached to! Tell us about a favorite vacation. I love to travel, and a few of my favorite vacations have been to Greece, Alaska, and a trip to several of the national parks out west. I'm very excited for our biggest adventure yet, coming up this fall, which is an African safari and a trip to Victoria Falls! Have you always been a teacher/tutor? Going to school for math and teaching was a second career for me; my first schooling post-high school was in photography and advertising/trade show display, so I still enjoy creative outlets when I have time!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - University of Colorado Boulder Visits Apt Tutoring - University of Colorado Boulder: An Update with Admissions Officer Peri</image:title>
<image:caption>Big news is making waves across the University of Colorado Boulder campus—Dion Sanders has been named the new head football coach! His arrival has generated excitement not only in sports circles but throughout the university community. With all the buzz, there are plenty of updates to share for prospective students interested in unique academic pathways and campus life. New Public Health Major CU Boulder is proud to announce the launch of a new Public Health major. This innovative program allows students to explore key areas in health policy, community health, and public health administration. For students interested in making a positive impact on communities locally and globally, this program offers a powerful combination of knowledge and hands-on experience. Musical Theatre The university continues to excel in its theatre offerings. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Theatre provides students with the perfect blend of artistic performance and technical training. Students in this program receive comprehensive exposure to both the stage and the behind-the-scenes work that makes musical theatre come to life. Alternatively, the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Musical Theatre program focuses more heavily on technical skills and is ideal for those with a strong interest in the mechanics of theatre production. For students more interested in a broad-based theatre education, CU Boulder offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre. This program allows students to explore a variety of theatre disciplines, with the chance to participate in professional productions such as the Shakespeare on Campus series. This summer program gives students the opportunity to work with professional Shakespearean actors, providing valuable real-world experience. Exploratory Studies: A Path for the Undecided CU Boulder’s Exploratory Studies program is an excellent option for students unsure about their major. Designed for those who want to explore different academic disciplines before committing to a specific field, it offers flexibility and support. It’s also the default option for students who did not gain admission to more competitive programs like Business or Engineering. For students interested in Engineering, it’s worth noting that CU Boulder’s Engineering program has a competitive acceptance rate of 40-50%, with Aerospace Engineering being even more selective. Housing For students in the College of Arts & Sciences, there are Honors Residence Halls that offer small, tight-knit communities where students can take classes together. As students move into their sophomore year, many choose to live in nearby student apartments or houses. Admissions & Scholarships Peri told us that applicants are encouraged to focus most of their energy on crafting a strong academic profile. If test scores fall below the middle 50th percentile for a chosen major, it may be best not to submit them. CU Boulder also offers generous scholarship opportunities for out-of-state students. Around 25% of out-of-state students receive automatic scholarships, ranging from $6,000 to $16,000 annually. With all of these exciting opportunities, both on and off the field, CU Boulder continues to offer a dynamic and enriching experience for all students. Thank you for stopping by, Peri!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Featured Apt Tutor: Karli - Karli</image:title>
<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? My favorite part of tutoring is getting to witness students' enthusiasm about learning. The light-bulb moments they experience when they solve a problem that initially perplexed them are exciting and fulfilling. My favorite subject to tutor is math, because it helps build problem-solving skills. Even if students don't end up using algebra or geometry as adults, the logical reasoning they develop when learning math serves as a transferable skill that will aid them for the rest of their lives. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? I enjoy working at Apt Tutoring because I feel valued as a person. The environment at Apt Tutoring is quite calm, quiet, and charming, and the Apt Tutoring team has been nothing but kind and welcoming. What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I enjoy practicing the flute, playing video games, reading, and spending time with loved ones. I am also an avid enjoyer of The Beatles; I listen to them every day when driving to and from work! What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I majored in philosophy and minored in English, gender and women's studies, and flute performance. My favorite class was Ancient Philosophy. In this class my love for Plato's dialogues was born, and since then I have spent countless hours developing interpretive accounts of the ethics in his dialogues. If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive, who would you choose, and why? If I could have a coffee with any person dead or alive, I would choose Socrates. Since Socrates never wrote anything down, we don't know much about him. The little we do know comes from the writings of his friends and followers. So I would like to meet Socrates for myself to hear directly from him who he was, what his life was like, what his beliefs were, and how he practiced philosophy. Perhaps we could also discuss ethics and epistemology together!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Lafayette College Visits Apt Tutoring - Lafayette College: An Update with Admissions Officer Zach</image:title>
<image:caption>This fall, we had the opportunity to meet with Zach from Lafayette College at our office to get an update on the latest developments at the college. Zach, who studied neuroscience during his time at Lafayette, recently joined the admissions team. He shared with us how Lafayette is “always growing and evolving” to meet the needs of its students. Campus Enhancements and New Facilities Lafayette College continues to make significant improvements to its campus facilities. One of the latest additions is the McCartney Street Apartments, a modern suite- and apartment-style residence hall. In addition, other residence halls are undergoing updates to provide students with more comfortable and contemporary living spaces. The college has also invested in academic spaces. The Simon Center for Economics & Business was recently revamped, though it still does not offer a business degree. Lafayette opened a new Geology Outdoor Classroom, enhancing its science facilities. Looking ahead, the college is set to open the Wallach Sports Performance and Lacrosse Center in the fall of 2025, further strengthening its athletic facilities. Expanding Academic Opportunities In response to evolving student interests, Lafayette has introduced several new minors, including Indigenous Studies, Music Technology, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. These additions reflect the college’s commitment to diversifying its academic offerings and staying at the forefront of emerging fields. Test-Optional Admissions and Student Profiles Zach emphasized Lafayette’s commitment to being “truly test-optional” and the college’s dedication to holistic admissions. For applicants who did submit test scores, the average SAT score for the Class of 2028 was between 1340 and 1490, and the average ACT score ranged from 30 to 33. The average GPA for the incoming class was 3.56. As Lafayette College continues to grow and innovate, it remains dedicated to providing a dynamic and supportive environment for students to thrive both academically and personally. Thank you for taking the time to visit with us, Zach!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Syracuse University Visits Apt Tutoring - Exciting Developments at Syracuse University: A Conversation with Admissions Officer Ken</image:title>
<image:caption>We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Ken, an admissions officer from Syracuse University, who shared some exciting updates. One of the most significant changes is the university’s plan to double its engineering student enrollment over the next five years. Currently, Syracuse enrolls 1,500 engineering students, but with the arrival of Micron, a major microchip company, in Syracuse next year, the university is gearing up to expand its engineering programs to 3,000 students. In addition to this, Syracuse is making waves with new academic offerings. The Newhouse School of Communications is launching a new Esports major, making Syracuse the largest university in the country to offer this program. Syracuse’s campus continues to grow as well. Over the past two decades, the university has consistently added a new building each year. Recently, two new residence halls were completed, with two more currently under construction. Students can also look forward to a new student and wellness center, which includes a pet therapy room and even a hot tub for relaxation and wellness. When it comes to admissions, Syracuse University has joined a growing number of schools in moving away from considering legacy status in their decision-making process. Instead, the university prioritizes applicants who demonstrate active involvement in their high school communities, whether through sports, community service, or other extracurriculars. Syracuse values students who bring that same energy to campus life. Syracuse has also embraced a test-optional policy, with 70% of current freshmen applying without submitting standardized test scores. This approach underscores the university’s commitment to making the admissions process more accessible and holistic. Support for students is a top priority at Syracuse. Based on a vote taken by the student body, the university offers special free tutoring for its top 25 most challenging classes, as well as paid peer and staff tutoring options. Syracuse students are deeply committed to giving back to their community. The Food Recovery Network collects surplus food from campus dining facilities and delivers it to local charities in the city. In addition, the annual 12-hour dance-a-thon raises money for a local children’s hospital, and the Big Event sees 200 students volunteering to clean up parks and assist with Meals on Wheels. With its focus on academic excellence, community engagement, and student well-being, Syracuse University continues to evolve as a leading institution that prepares students for success both in and out of the classroom. Thank you for taking th time to visit with us, Ken!</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I love seeing when students can reach breakthroughs. School is tough at times for everyone, and finally reaching the point where you understand something that was really troubling you is a really rewarding experience. I find it really exciting to see students finally figure something out that has been difficult for them. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? I love having the ability to help students succeed, and working at Apt has given me the chance to do so. Lisa and Meg have done a great job of setting themselves up as a fantastic resource for students on the South Shore and I am excited to be a part of Apt. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I was an Economics major with a Data Analysis minor at Wesleyan University and have just started my Master's of Business Analytics at Babson College this fall. I can't narrow it down to just one class, so I want to shout out a couple that I took. My first favorite was my Data Visualization course, which focused on communicating data and statistics effectively in a visual format. I loved this course so much that I was a Teacher Assistant for the course in my final semester. The other was a film class named The Language of Popular Cinema, which focused on dissecting movies and the techniques filmmakers used to make them from the beginning of the industry to the present. It taught me a lot about analyzing media and we got to see some fantastic movies which I would probably never have been exposed to otherwise. What were your favorite extra-curricular activities in high school or college? Baseball was an instrumental part of both my time in high school and college. Playing at a D3 level was a fantastic way to gain a collaborative mindset and hone in my ability to be a leader. I played third base and pitched at Cohasset High and then became a full-time pitcher at Wesleyan. I was also on the soccer team in high school and had just as much fun there as I did with my baseball teams. What do you like to do in your free time? As you might be able to tell from my extracurricular section, I am a very active person. In addition to the sports I already mentioned, I love hockey, golf, hiking, and skiing. I also try to listen to a lot of music and play chess a good amount. What's your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? This year, I've been listening to Burn, Burn, Burn by Zach Bryan a lot. I would say my favorite artist is Tyler, the Creator. Tell us about a favorite vacation. Every year, my extended family on my Dad's side does a week-long vacation where we all stay in the same house which is usually in Maine. I can't narrow it down to one specific vacation from these, but it is always a highlight of my year. Salty or sweet person? What is your favorite salty/sweet snack? When I'm snacking, I usually go salty. My go to lately has been Dot's honey mustard pretzels. I am still a big dessert person and always will be up for ice cream. My favorite flavor is Coffee Oreo. Please tell us more fun facts about yourself! I have a lot of British ancestry. My Granddad lived in London until after my Dad was born and I have visited family over there in the past. I played the trumpet in high school. I used to be a sailing instructor.</image:caption>

It was amazing to return to a place I haven't been able to visit in years and show my family why I love South Korea so much. If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive, who would you choose, and why? I would love to hang out with Alphonse Mucha (an artist from the Art Nouveau period) because I love his style of art and am curious to know what inspired him. Salty or sweet person? What is your favorite salty/sweet snack? Why choose one or the other?! I love both! I love snow cones and Cheetos. Not together, obviously... because that might be weird. <image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I enjoy getting to know each student and what makes them tick. Each student requires a slightly different approach, and I like the challenge of figuring out what works for a particular student. When a student is engaged and learning, it is extremely satisfying as a tutor. What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? I generally enjoy tutoring anything that the student is excited or curious about. This leads to a lot of interesting questions, which is exciting for a teacher. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? I like working at Apt Tutoring because, unlike teaching in a classroom, I can get to know students on a very individual level. Working one-on-one with students gives me immediate feedback about what they are learning and processing. Because of this, I can refine my approach as a teacher both in the classroom and as a tutor. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? My undergraduate degree was in biology with a concentration in environmental science. My favorite class was microbiology. My graduate degree is in curriculum and instruction, and I was particularly interested in the classes in which we learned about making learning and classrooms more inclusive to all kinds of learners. What do you like to do in your free time? Most of my free time is spent with my three children. I am an avid runner and also coach softball. What's your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? My favorite book is Centennial by James Mitchner. I am a big fan of U2, and I love to treat myself to Oreo's now and again. Tell us about a favorite vacation. I recently spent a week in Prague with my daughter. We had a wonderful time exploring the city. If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive? Who would you choose, and why? Since I do not drink coffee, we would have to have tea, but I would love to have a conversation with former President Obama. I admire and respect him very much and would love to hear his perspective on a number of things. Salty or sweet person? What is your favorite salty/sweet snack? I am both a salty and sweet person—often at the same time. Nothing beats a chocolate-covered pretzel. Please tell us more fun facts about yourself! I am in the process of learning to speak Spanish. I'm making progress, but I am definitely still a beginner. I lived in Ireland for a year after college and backpacked around the countryside.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tyler from Mitchell College stopped by our office to tell us about what’s new on campus. Located on the waterfront of New London, CT, Mitchell has a new public health major and has made some changes to its business major. A graduate of Mitchell, Tyler told us about his experience studying business and sports management. With only 550 students — all undergraduates — Mitchell is dedicated to supporting its students. In addition to the Bentsen program, which provides academic support, Mitchell offers the Thames Program, a transition program for students who are college-able but not college-ready. We enjoyed hearing about Mitchell’s traditions like the Beach Bash for accepted and deposited students, Winter Ball, and Spring Soiree. On weekends, Mitchell Resident Assistants plan movie nights and block parties.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? Helping students be successful. It’s very rewarding to teach or explain math concepts to a student who is not sure of how to solve math problems. Having them understand the process and arrive at a solution is wonderful to see. What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? All math courses and levels from grades 7-12. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? Great management, friendly, professional tutors, and an excellent environment for optimal teaching and learning. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I was a liberal arts major at Villanova University, which means I enrolled in a variety of science, math, English, philosophy, psychology, and business classes. My favorite class was a physiology class, where we studied the effects of exposure to different external stimuli on animals. In graduate school at Boston College, I majored in finance. What do you like to do in your free time? I like to work out, listen to music, play basketball, sail, golf, and do yard work. I spend quality time with my three daughters and all the grandkids. What’s your favorite book, song, or band? I enjoy reading; I read at least two books per month. It's mostly fiction, but I do like non-fiction books as well. There are so many great music artists. How do you select? I like old-school music, such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and CSNY, but the 1980s had great music as well. Tell us about a favorite vacation Family trip to Disney World with my wife and three daughters. Great family time! How can you beat Tower of Terror and Rocking Rollercoaster for rides? If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive? Who would you choose and Why? Probably my parents because I miss them so much and it would be fun to talk with them about everything. I might also select Presidents Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. To speak with the early great leaders would be cool. Salty or sweet person? Both. My favorite food is seafood. Fun Fact I have a fraternal twin brother.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I love guiding students through challenging material in different ways and witnessing the "aha" moments. I believe everyone, regardless of their background, has the potential to learn any subject with perseverance and a supportive teacher. What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? Math and science, especially neuroscience, chemistry. and biology. I love studying all the things that we can't see that allows our bodies to function. What do you like to do in your free time? Woodworking, paddleboarding, ice skating, fitness and outdoor activities, cooking (and eating), fixing things like my car, and hopefully ballet soon. What’s your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? I am currently enjoying reading Adam Grant books. He is a business psychologist who inspires you to do things like find your Hidden Potential. If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive? Who would you choose, and why? I would have tea with Patrice Bergeron. He is not only one of the best hockey players in the history of the NHL but exudes unparalleled leadership qualities on and off the ice. I find this refreshing in our polarized world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thank you for visiting us, John! We enjoyed hearing about what’s happening at the University of Pittsburgh! Pitt’s new health and wellness facility brings together its health and wellness services. In addition to renovating its library, its main dining hall recently underwent a major renovation and now includes an Italian section with white tablecloths. Pitt has six direct-entry schools. Applicants apply to the school that offers their intended major. But don’t worry if you’re undeclared: you’ll apply to Diedrich, the arts and sciences college, and receive additional advising. Thanks to four hospitals on campus and one more on the way, one of Pitt’s most renowned programs is its nursing school, which has VR cadavers and mannequin sim labs. The Living Learning Community for nurses is next to a trauma hospital. No wonder its nursing graduates are in demand, often receiving sign-up bonuses. We also talked about the honors college. One of the big draws of which is student-led research. Although it’s competitive if an applicant isn’t accepted when applying to Pitt, it’s possible to re-apply as a first-year student.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? I enjoy being able to help students get better at the skills that I know they possess. You tutor SAT, ACT, HSPT, ISEE, and SSAT prep in addition to school subjects. What subjects do you currently enjoy tutoring the most? I like tutoring all of the subject matters, but I do enjoy the science section of the ACT and any science tutoring best, as I am a science teacher. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? Apt has been a great working environment and I have been able to meet a lot of additional students besides my students at my school. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I majored in chemistry and secondary education at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. My favorite class would have to be my biochemistry class. The professor was one of the funniest that I have ever had, and even though the class was hard, the lab was very enjoyable. What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my family. I also enjoy running and going to the gym. What's your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? Favorite book: The Disappearing Spoon Favorite band: Shinedown Favorite snack: I'm a sucker for Cheetos. Tell us about a favorite vacation. My favorite vacation was when my husband and I went to Key West back in 2015. We were able to go on some amazing excursions, and the atmosphere there was so much fun. Please tell us more fun facts about yourself. I currently teach science. I have two daughters and two cats. I love to cook and bake. My favorite color is blue.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What do you like most about tutoring? Tutoring is a unique experience that allows me to connect one-on-one with students and to learn more about their interests, experiences, and aspirations. At the same, I love the opportunity to help them with not only concrete tasks-like their college essays but also to see them grow as writers. As someone with a doctorate in art history, I am committed to helping students develop their writing not only as a practical skill but also one with its own aesthetic sensibilities. What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? I really enjoy tutoring writing and related tasks. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? It's wonderful working with motivated and creative students; at the same time, it's been amazing to work with someone as engaged and thoughtful as Lisa over the years. We are in sync about our approach to writing, and I always appreciate exchanging ideas about teaching and other aspects of our work. Contributing to the vision of a small company makes my work feel significant, and I love being able to communicate so directly and easily with my Apt colleagues. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I majored in Classics with a minor in Italian studies. My favorite class was probably Roman Satire. What do you like to do in your free time? I love taking long walks with my golden retriever Tulip, watching French and Italian movies, visiting museums and galleries, and reading novels set in Italy during World War II. What's your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? Tough questions! I love almost anything written by Ian McEwan, and especially enjoyed Atonement; I love equally the bands Yo la Tengo and Pink Martini; and I love a scoop of stracciatella or pistacchio gelato when available! Tell us about a favorite vacation. I am passionate about traveling, and some of my favorite destinations include Bogotà, Paris, Capri, London, and Rovereto. If you could have a coffee with any person dead or alive? Who would you choose, and why? I would love to have coffee with French film director Jean-Luc Godard or Italian writer Natalia Ginzburg. Salty or sweet person? What is your favorite salty/sweet snack? Salty! My favorite snack is a tramezzino (mini-sandiwch in a triangle-shape) with smoked provolone, grilled zucchine, and tomato on brown bread from the Rosa Salva café in Campo San Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, Italy. Please tell us more fun facts about yourself! I have lived in various parts of Italy and speak Italian fluently; my dog has worked in a few commercials; and I have lived in Rome, Florence, and Venice. Aside from working with Apt Tutoring and as a college professor, I am an active art critic and scholar.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In college, I completed a dual degree program and majored in both chemical engineering and music (plus a minor in computer science!). My favorite class was probably my senior chemical engineering lab, where we got to work with miniature distillation columns, heat exchangers, batch reactors, and more. It was exactly what I had pictured being a scientist would look like, right down to the lab coats, goggles, and practical shoes. I'm currently pursuing a career in classical music, but I really missed using the STEM side of my brain and tutoring has been a great way for me to exercise those skills. I've worked with kids in a variety of roles in the past, but I've found that high school is a really special time because each student grows so much both in their studies and as a person in the span of just one school year. I'm currently tutoring students in math, physics, and chemistry, but calculus is always my favorite subject to tutor because it opens up so many possibilities of what math can do. In my free time, I love to take the dog for long walks at Turkey Hill or Wompatuck, try out new coffee shops, or go out for a bike ride. I recently got the opportunity to travel to South Africa for two weeks on an orchestra tour, where we got to play 7 concerts in 5 cities as well as play with local young musicians in every city we visited. With all that traveling done this summer, I am ready to settle into the new school year this fall and am really looking forward to meeting my new students and working with previous ones again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alana joined our team in 2016. She specializes in tutoring high school math, including AP Calculus and Statistics, SAT & ACT Prep, and college math. What do you like most about tutoring? I like seeing students overcome their fear of math. I usually get students coming in saying that they hate math, and my goal is to get them to at least be neutral on the subject. I never expect students to love math by the end of our time together, but many do! What subjects do you enjoy tutoring the most? The subject I enjoy tutoring the most is calculus. There is beauty in every math course, but calculus is where students get to see all the pieces come together for the first time. Why do you like working at Apt Tutoring? I love being able to work with students for multiple years. I've had students from 7th grade to Sophomore year in college. No other job would let me develop that type of relationship with students. What did you major in at college, and what was your favorite class? I majored in mathematics with a specialty in statistics. My favorite math course was Discrete Mathematics. However, I was in the Kilachand Honors College at BU, so I got to take some really interesting classes outside of my discipline. My all-time favorite course was Serious Comics, which studied the use of graphic novels to cover serious topics such as war, genocide, and natural disasters. We read novels such as Maus and Persepolis. It was a great introduction to visual storytelling. What do you like to do in your free time? I like to go hiking with my husband, my daughter, and our dog! I also enjoy reading and cooking. What’s your favorite book, song (or band), snack food? Book - Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer Band - Modest Mouse Snack food - Reeses Tell us about a favorite vacation. My favorite vacation was my honeymoon in Washington State, where I got to hike in Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and Hoh Rain Forest. Tell us more fun facts about yourself. I do the NYT crossword every day. I currently have a 457-day streak!</image:caption>
