Our Tutors:
Lisa Gelman – Ph.D., Director
Lisa holds a B.A. from Smith College and a MA and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn she instructed undergraduates in writing and was awarded the Chimicles Teaching Fellowship based on student evaluations and faculty recommendations. In addition, she has taught political science at Haverford College and Penn as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Lisa has helped hundreds of students prepare for the SAT and ACT. Students she assisted with their college essays have been accepted to Barnard, Brandeis, Brown, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, George Washington University, New York University, Stanford, University of Southern California, Williams, Penn, and Yale. Lisa is an associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association.
Anne - Elementary Reading, Writing & Math & Middle School Study Skills
Anne received a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a M.Ed.
from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Anne has twelve years of experience as a classroom teacher and has extensive experience tutoring students with LDs and autism. Anne’s professional development includes taking education courses at Lesley and Simmons colleges.
Caitlin - Middle and High School Math, Chemistry, Physics and Study Skills
A graduate of Hartwick College, where she majored in geology, Caitlin holds two Masters’ degrees. She has close to three years of experience as a tutor. Caitlin enjoys creating an exciting learning environment and nurturing her students’ enthusiasm for education and lifelong learning.
Will - SAT, ACT, SSAT & ISEE Prep & Math
A graduate of Cornell, Will taught math to middle and high school students at the Vermont Commons School for four years and to 5th and 6th graders at Boston Collegiate Charter School for one year. Will has been a professional tutor for eleven years. He has also been a Lead and Watch Officer for the Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center. Will is currently taking graduate-level math classes at Harvard.
Silvia - College Essays, Organization & Study Skills, ISEE, SSAT & SAT Prep
Silvia majored in public policy at Brown University and holds a law degree from Suffolk University Law School. She is also Massachusetts State certified in middle and high school English and Social Studies. As a teacher at Ipswich High School, she taught sophomore U.S. history and freshmen and junior English. In addition, she taught a SAT prep course and coached the mock trial team.
Mary Beth - French & Spanish, English Composition & Essays
Mary Beth majored in Spanish and Latin American Studies at Tulane and received a M.A. in Spanish Literature at Georgetown. She has more than six years of experience tutoring students in elementary school through college. Mary Beth enjoys traveling, especially to Aruba, where she grew up, and spending time with her young son.
Eric - SAT and ACT Prep & Writing
Eric has a breadth of experience as a polished writer and editor. Eric received his B.A. from Framingham State College in English and his Ed.M from the Mind, Brain and Education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As part of a research group in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard, Eric utilizes his skills in editing, proofreading and writing. As a trained educator, Eric enjoys working with students to improve their own writing and to help them achieve their goals. He particularly enjoys guiding students through the often difficult process of essay writing.
Dan - Physics, Math, Chemistry, SAT and ACT Prep
A graduate of MIT, where he majored in physics, Dan has taught all levels of chemistry and physics at local public schools since 2005. Prior to that, Dan worked as a physicist and engineer. Dan developed the first A.P. Physics-C: Mechanics course at one of the high schools he taught and received a certificate in A.P. Physics from the A.P. Institute.
Heidi - SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, HSPT Prep and Science & Math
Heidi earned her B.A. in Theatre Education from Emerson College and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She then went on to get her M.Ed. in Education Administration from Eastern Nazarene College. With both administrative and classroom experience, Heidi is uniquely positioned to know what students need to succeed. Currently, Heidi teaches history, science and English at a local private school. Heidi's goal for her students is to create an environment that encourages, challenges and inspires them to find success. In addition to her work in schools, Heidi has been a tutor for over 10 years. She also has an interest for musical theatre and theatre production.
Wendy - Reading
Wendy has her B.A. in Elementary Education from Towson University. Wendy spent the beginning of her career teaching first and second grade. For more than 10 years, she was a public school reading specialist in Maryland. Wendy has a special interest in reading acquisition and has helped students of all ages learn to read, including students with dyslexia and learning differences. She has completed 45 hours of Orton-Gillingham training and has received training in phonemic awareness, Wilson Reading, Lindamood Bell techniques, and 6-Traits Writing. Wendy is currently employed with the Salem Public School system and is working on acquiring her Massachusetts licensure.
Judy - SAT, ACT, GRE Prep and Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus & Statistics
Judy received her B.A. in both Mathematics and Psychology from SUNY at Albany earning Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa distinctions. She also holds a M.S. in Information Systems from Northeastern University and a M.S. in Education and Rehabilitation Counseling from Hunter College of CUNY, New York. Judy began her career as a mathematics and computer teacher in high schools in Massachusetts and Maine. She taught a wide range of mathematics courses including basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, technical mathematics, and college algebra. Judy then became an IT specialist working in the Boston area with well-known companies in roles ranging from project leader to senior manager. She credits her experience in the computer industry with having inspired her to return to teaching. She is excited to integrate her corporate experience and teaching skills in order to provide students with the incentive to continue the study of mathematics. Judy finds it a very rewarding experience to see her students improve their performance and reach their goals.
Paula - Reading, Writing, Math, Organization and Study Skills
Paula received her B.S. in Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. After working at State Street Financial and Fleet Boston Financial for six years, Paula went on to pursue her Master of Education degree from Salem State University, along with a C.A.G.S. degree in school administration. Paula has her K-6 Massachusetts licensure and has taught with Marblehead Public Schools for six years. Paula's passion for working with students is evident both in and out of the classroom. Paula enjoys helping students overcome their struggles and seeing them blossom with confidence. Paula enjoys spending time with her husband, young daughter, and parents.
Sally - College Essays, English, History, Organization & Study skills
Sally received her B.A. in Russian Studies from Illinois State University. After spending time traveling in Russia and Europe after college, she earned a Teaching English as a Second Language certificate from St. Michael's College. As a volunteer for adult basic education in rural Vermont, Sally had the opportunity to work with Bosnian refugees, Chinese immigrants and women with children transitioning off of welfare. These experiences inspired her to earn her master of education degree from the University of Vermont where she went on to teach high school social studies and English. A move to Charlottesville, Virginia gave her an opportunity to work as research faculty with the Curry School of Education at UVA where she worked to support educators in the field with literacy screening and data collection. Additionally, she taught several ESL classes and remedial reading for young students. With a total of 15 years in education (8 of them as a classroom teacher), Sally has dedicated her professional life to improving the lives of others. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her three children and husband, bird watching, flower gardening, and drinking good coffee.
