Lisa Gelman, Ph.D., CEP – College Counseling
Lisa holds a B.A. from Smith College and a M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. Since 2002, Lisa has helped hundreds of students navigate the college admissions process and write application essays that get results. She strives to alleviate the pressure that high school students and parents face as students apply to colleges. As a Certified Educational Planner and a professional member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, Lisa regularly attends conferences and seminars to learn about the latest trends in education and college admissions. Derek – Physics, Math, SAT & ACT Prep
As of junior year in high school, Derek was dead set on majoring in chemistry, but signed up for AP Physics because of his general interest in science. It didn’t take long before he realized that physics was going to be his life. He fell in love with how physics explains things on a fundamental level, prompting you to keep asking how something works and dive deeper. Derek graduated cum laude and with honors from Clark University, where he majored in physics and math, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in physics from Tufts. While at Clark, he was a peer learning advisor, tutored for the math department and interned at the radio station. At Tufts, he has been a research assistant and teaching assistant. Derek enjoys fishing, golfing and hiking.
Alana – Math, Statistics, SAT & ACT Prep
While earning a B.S. in mathematics from Boston University, Alana tutored student-athletes one-on-one throughout her four years there. It is rare for the University to grant this position to an incoming freshman, but armed with a solid foundation in math and the maturity and personality to handle the job, it made an exception. Alana also served as a resident assistant overseeing 400 students. She is currently working on a Master's in education. She joined our team in 2016 and tutors high school and college math, AP calculus and statistics, and test prep, including SAT, ACT and Subject Tests. Her hobbies include fantasy football, reading, and volunteering.
Corey – English, History, Study Skills & Test Prep
Corey graduated Cum Laude from Bridgewater State University with a B.A. in corporate communication studies and a minor in Asian studies. As an undergraduate, she studied Japanese and completed her pilot’s license. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with M.A. in special needs education while teaching and tutoring English, math, science and history at the high school level and is currently a high school English teacher. In her free time, she enjoys running and boxing.
Jo Ann – Biology, Chemistry, Test Prep & Study Skills
Jo Ann has over 25 years' experience teaching and holding administrative positions including director of science and health in the Waltham public school system. Along with a B.S. in biology, Jo Ann earned a law degree from Suffolk University and an M.S. from Tufts University. Joining our team in 2013, Jo Ann specializes in SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, ACT English, Reading and Science, biology, chemistry, the SAT biology and chemistry subject tests, and ISEE, SSAT and HSPT prep..
Janina – Test Prep, Study Skills & AP Biology
Janina graduated from Boston University, where she majored in religion and minored in public health and took many science courses. She is also holds a M.A. in public health at Tufts University. She was an intern and is currently an educator for One Heart Source, a humanitarian organization combatting poverty, disease, and illiteracy. She has tutored students since 2010 and has been a Big Sister Association volunteer since 2011. Janina enjoys reading, playing the guitar, and singing in a gospel choir. Since 2015, Janina has helped our students with SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT and HSPT prep, organization and study skills and school subjects.
Steven – SAT & ACT Prep, Math & Statistics
Along with a B.A. from Harvard University in economics and a Master’s in education from Cambridge College, Steven has years of teaching experience at both the middle school and high school levels. While an undergraduate, he tutored students in economics while still finding time to volunteer with an inner city afterschool program in Boston. Steven joined Apt Tutoring in 2011. He is a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Texas Longhorns. He also enjoys jogging and comedy movies. Steven graduated from Boston College High School. He is the father of a young son.
Sally – Admissions Essays, English, History & Study skills
Sally received her B.A. in Russian Studies from Illinois State University. After spending time traveling in Russia and Europe after college, she earned a Teaching English as a Second Language certificate from St. Michael's College. As a volunteer for adult basic education in rural Vermont, Sally had the opportunity to work with Bosnian refugees, Chinese immigrants and women with children transitioning off of welfare. These experiences inspired her to earn her master of education degree from the University of Vermont where she went on to teach high school social studies and English. Additionally, she taught several ESL classes and remedial reading for young students. With a total of 15 years in education (eight of them as a classroom teacher), Sally has dedicated her professional life to improving the lives of others. She joined Apt Tutoring in 2010. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her three children and husband, bird watching, flower gardening, and drinking good coffee.
Paula – English, Study Skills, Test Prep
With over eleven years of classroom experience teaching high school English, Paula's passion is contagious. She is a graduate of Assumption College, where she majored in English with a concentration in writing and mass communications, and the University of Massachusetts where she received a MA in education. Paula has taught a range of ELA courses, including AP classes, English as a Second Language, literacy intervention classes, and Humanities. When she isn't spending time with her family, including her three young children, she enjoys writing fiction, reading, and taking creative writing courses at Grub Street in Boston.
